Djembe

This is a piece I choreographed for my Dance Composition final last semester. I tried to go a little outside the box by letting the music be dictated and inspired from the movement... I thought it turned out pretty good.

Loved it! They must hate you in class 'cause you're so much better than they are, huh?

Anyhoo, reminded me of Arrested Development Night Part 1. I'm feelin' the itch for a part 2.

First we brought up Buster. Then discovered that Justice is blind... what is next??

Bek,
That was fantastic! I love the emotional energy of the music and dance. Mike came in to see what I was doing while he was on the phone. He gave me the "I can't wait to watch that look"!

You have a gift!

yes! arrested development 2 night is on!!! i want to see the seal one, you know where buster gets his hand eaten off... etc etc

thanks for the encouragement guys... i think i am going to elaborate on this idea eventually... play more on different rhythms slow it down... etc my original vision was to have at least two or three percussionists to add dynamic and variety... i'll get to it someday.

Beka,
This is Sean. That rocked my socks. FOR REAL, I really enjoyed it. Katie and I love it that you are going for it, I think you will be as famous as Reed. (Reed in the future.) This is old news by now, but I also loved your and Jessica's Michael Jackson moves I was laughing my "A" off. It was way the best part. I watched it at least twice.

thanks everyone for your encouragement. anyone involved with/ pursuing the "arts" knows it can be tough to explain to others what it is exactly you are doing or plan to do with your "craft"... i think an easier question to answer is the WHY and in addressing that the what is better understood.

ha i don't know? just thoughts. i'm happy to share with all yall, my friends, the things i've been working on.

That was deeply moving... you know that emotional part when the beat swells and the dancers do the 'lioness at the waterhole' step... followed by the 'possessed native'.... BACK FLIP!... BACK FLIP! and..... POSE!!!
Totally valid... Love it!

hahaha. thanks sis. , "i mean, yours totally was the best... you should submit it."

actually, i didn't end up submitting it because i wasn't entirely happy with it, and didn't have time to improve upon it this time around... but next spring... you could be a lioness in the waterhole if you want...

dang Beka-you are crazy awsome..crazy awsome!! That was beautiful. Thanks a lot for sharing. Reid will love to see that after nap time. :)
I was wondering, how do you come up with the steps if you are the one playing the beat...is that a loaded question? My mind is being blown trying to figure it out

bEka said...

actually... that was THE most difficult part of this process. because i would play the beat to let them hear... then i would try to teach it with counts.. but i couldn't demonstrate with the music, because i was the music.. kinda frustrating. so finally i got smart and taped myself playing the beat then would play it back and do it with them... it was a learning experience.
but to just originally come up with movement i played different african beats/songs and just kinda "brainstormed"... then translated that into the beat i wanted.

ahhh-recording the beat!! what a great idea, yet so simple. you rock girl
